General: Dicot-herb, perennial

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; dentate, lobed (pinnately), parted (pinnately) leaf margin; Pinnate leaf venation; oblong, obovate leaf shape

Flowers: perfect, unisexual, monoecious; complete, incomplete, regular, irregular; yellow; epigynous ovary position

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is distributed in blades, escarpments, rocky, open woods and sandy woods.

ILPIN Notes: Pammel, L.H. 1911. A Manual of Poisonous Plants. Torch Press. Cedar Rpaids, Iowa. 977 pp. Species has a short caudex, sometimes rhizomes. Disk florets are perfect, ray florets are pistillate, both fertile. Species is more rare in eastern and southern Illinois.
