General: Monocot, perennial

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Calcareous swampy meadows, alder thickets; acid sphagnum bogs; usually in peaty soils in areas like paths that are free from competition; indifferent to light conditions, responds more to disturbance; invades young scrubby woodland, lumbered woodland.

ILPIN Notes: Plants are self-pollinated when raindrops fall on the flowers (Catling, 1980). Basal leaves are scales, cauline leaves full and shiny. Catling, P. M. 1980. Rain-assisted autogamy in Liparis loeselii (L.) L. C. Rich. (Orchidaceae). Torrey Botanical Club Bulletin 107: 525-529.
