Ecology & Natural History
Habitat: Species is distributed in cold, fresh water streams; standing water. It is characteristic of cool, woodland pools, sometimes shaded by Cephalanthus occidentalis and Quercus bicolor. ILPIN Notes: Species attracts and is eaten by small aquatic animals; it is often important wildfowl food. Fassett, N.C. 1957. A Manual of Aquatic Plants. This is local through Illinois, but rare in southern counties. This is a floating thalloid plant, has 1 root, green below. Occasionally it is without roots. It has large, tangled masses of dark blue- green, versus light green of other Lemnas. Functional Relationships:
