Species Description

General: Monocot, perennial

Roots: adventitious, rhizomes

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; entire leaf margin; Parallel leaf venation; awl-shaped leaf shape

Inflorescence: panicle

Flowers: perfect; 3 merous; complete; hypogynous ovary position

Fruit: grain

Physiology: autotrophic; C4 C02 fixation

Reproduction: sexual, vegetative

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Open woods, roadsides, slopes, railroads; sandy soils in sparse Black-oak woods in Northern Illinois.

ILPIN Notes: form-seeds at 10-15 lbs/acre broadcast; 175, 000 seeds/lb Scaly rhizome; stiff elongate cartilaginous brown auricles at base of leaf blades are characteristic. Depending on maturity, hairs about the spikelets are first golden brown to fulvous brown, and later on drying, grayish. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 60, 61
