Species Description

General: Monocot, perennial

Roots: adventitious, rhizomes

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; dentate leaf margin; Parallel leaf venation; awl-shaped, linear, oblong leaf shape

Flowers: perfect; incomplete, not petals, not sepals; hypogynous ovary position

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is found floating; in sloughs; avoids colder waters of springs and spring branches.

ILPIN Notes: Plants - at 1' intervals; seeds - broadcast. Seed company no. 11. Species has very elongated and narrower floating leaves than most other Illinois Potamogeton species. Leaves are not arched or folded, submerged leaves with tiny 1-celled teeth. Marshbirds and shorebirds eat seeds as food. Regarding aquatic species cover, this pertains to fish (also foodplant). Regarding aquatic species food value, this refers to aquatic furbearers.
