Shoots: basal leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; serrate, lobed (pinnately), parted (pinnately) leaf margin; Pinnate leaf venation; awl-shaped, linear, oblong, ovate leaf shape

Habitat: Species is distributed in low, moist fallow fields, sandy, open alluvial ground, meadows, upland sterile slopes and ridges, graded and eroded ground, borders of ditches, sloughs, and railroads.

ILPIN Notes: Species is occasional in southern one-third of Illinois. Species often does not have a pappus.
