General: Dicot-herb, annual

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; serrate, lobed (pinnately), parted (pinnately) leaf margin; Pinnate leaf venation; awl-shaped, linear, oblong, lanceolate leaf shape

Inflorescence: panicle, head

Flowers: perfect, unisexual, monoecious; incomplete, regular; epigynous ovary position

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Dwellings; barnyards; farm lots; low and alluvial ground in rich fallow fields; borders of woods; mudflats along streams and ponds; waste ground; roadsides; railroads. A favorite habitat is in alleys of older cities.

ILPIN Notes: An economic weed in western states-PIN. Florets all fertile, the outer pistillate. Naturalized. Leaves green, glabrous, greatly dissected (50+ divisions per leaf); sweet- scented when bruised.
