Ecology & Natural History
Habitat: Species is distributed in rocky, open woods; base of wooded bluffs. ILPIN Notes: In early fall, plant forms "frost-flowers" or white, ribbon-like, fluted or twisted ice crystals, about 2.5-5 cm broad from plant base. Plant has rising sap - sap from still active root into dead, dry stem, freezes through cracks in stem, and ice is pushed out by more sap behind it. Species is found only in the extreme southeast counties. Disk florets are perfect and fertile; ray florets are pistillate. Functional Relationships:
