Species Description

General: Dicot-herb, perennial

Roots: adventitious, fibrous

Shoots: opposite leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; serrate leaf margin; Pinnate leaf venation; cordate leaf shape

Inflorescence: head

Flowers: perfect, unisexual, monoecious; 5 merous; complete, incomplete, not sepals, regular, irregular; yellow; perigynous ovary position

Fruit: achene

Physiology: autotrophic

Reproduction: sexual

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Disturbed prairie remnants, woodland edges, open or rocky woods, and along railroads.

ILPIN Notes: Heads radiate on conical receptacles; rays yellow; achenes becoming papery. Pappus none (incomplete), or of 2-4 short teeth (complete flower), thus flower structure is not consistent. Concerning leaf venation, it may be pinnate or other. A variety Pitcheriana Hort, is cultivated and has been collected from St. Louis Co., Mo. This is including var. scabra (Danal) Fern. Ray flowers pistillate; disk flowers perfect - "a short-lived perennial."
