Species Description

Ecology & Natural History
Habitat: Species is distributed in rocky woods; wooded slopes; low woods. ILPIN Notes: Flowers are in a dense, head-like cluster, subtended by 4 large, white bracts; drupes are bright red; deeply impressed veins. Species is common to occasional. This pertains to terrestrial furbearers (especially rabbits, squirrels) who eat food, such as fruit, wood, foliage. Regarding waterfowl food value, this pertains especially to wood ducks. Regarding small non-game bird food value, this pertains especially to cardinals, evening grosbeaks, robins, wood thrushes, cedar waxwings. Regarding small mammals food value, this pertains especially to eastern chipmunks. Inner bark is very bitter and is sometimes used medicinally in tonics. roots are used to make tea as a substitute for quinine in combatting fevers. Seed company numbers: 15, 16, 18, 20, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, 33, 35, 36, 37, 39, 41, 45, 50, 51, 52, 57. Wood is very heavy, hard, strong, and tough. Form - seedlings, balled & burlapped.
