Ecology & Natural History
Habitat: Species is distributed in wastes, fence rows, along roads and railroads; occasionally spreading from cultivation in Illinois; sometimes planted as ornamental. ILPIN Notes: Species forms vegetative colonies almost impossible to eradicate. Young underground rootstocks and young leafy stems can be cooked as palatable vegetable substitute for asparagus, or treated as a salad; possible hayfever and dermatitis (Stephens); possible use of starchy fruits.
