Species Description

Ecology & Natural History
Habitat: Species is distributed in rich, upland woods; along river banks; well-drained slopes; ocasionally dry ridges. ILPIN Notes: Species maybe causes hayfever; fruit is edible after preparation. Marshbirds and shorebirds eat food in the form of acorns; terrestrial furbearers (esp. raccoons, tree squirrels) eat food in the form of acorns, bark, wood; also good den tree. Regarding waterfowl food value, this pertains especially to wood ducks. Regarding small non-game bird food value, this especially pertains to grackles, blue jays, brown thrashers, red-bellied woodpeckers, red-headed woodpeckers. Regarding small mammals food value, this especially pertains to eastern chipmunks, white-footed mice. Form - whips, seeds, balled & burlapped, seedlings. Wood is heavy, hard, strong, and close-grained. Species has pistillate flowers in groups of 1-3; leaves with 7-11 shallow, bristle-tipped lobes; acorn with very shallow, saucer-shaped cap.
