General: Monocot, perennial

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; entire leaf margin; Parallel leaf venation; oblong leaf shape

Flowers: perfect; complete, regular; white; hypogynous ovary position

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is distributed in wooded alluvial banks, rich wooded slopes, mostly in alluvial low valleys; shrub zone on sloping dunes facing Lake Michigan; sandy black-oak woods; in association with Fraxinus americana, Tilia americana; in calcareous springy places.

ILPIN Notes: Species is occasional in northern 3/5 of state; and Crawford & Wabash co. The young stems and leaves may be cooked as greens before reaching flowering stage.
