Ecology & Natural History
Habitat: Species is distributed on waste ground; woodlands. It is a member of our native woodland floras, often becomes a troublesome weed in lawns. It has a variety of habitats, from low meadows, wooded sandstone slopes, and pine woods. It is one of the few natives that are really weeds in the ecological sense. ILPIN Notes: Culms root at lower nodes; has erect vernal culms, sprawling autumnal phase. Species forms dense colonies. This is one of northern Illinois' worst lawn weeds. Minute glumes separate this from all other Muhlenbergia. It has contracted panicle. This species is the type of the genus. Functional Relationships:
