Species Description

General: Monocot, annual

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; entire leaf margin; Parallel leaf venation; awl-shaped leaf shape

Flowers: perfect; 3 merous; complete; hypogynous ovary position

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is distributed on low, ground in the open or in the shade by pond borders; oxbow lakes in flood plains of wooded or open river bottoms, muddy banks, gravel bars, dried up mud flats, waste ground. This is often a garden weed.

ILPIN Notes: Species is served to native Americans of western U.S. as food in the form of a starchy flour. Sterile lemma is awnless, or its awn < 3 mml., panicle contracted, branches ascending, panicle green; second glume and sterile lemma appressed; pubescent, not papillose. Species is found throughout the state.
