Species Description

General: Dicot-herb, perennial

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is distributed in swampy low spring-fed meadows, along spring branches and borders of small streams; lives in a variety of habitats; associated with Acer saccharinum, Ulmus americana. Species is distributed in spring branches and swampy open meadows fed by spring branches issuing from calcareous rocks; usually more open, sunny and slightly more alkaline habits than type variety - moist zone about a peat bog where livestock previously grazed; edges of bogs and marshes.

ILPIN Notes: This plant has sun and shade forms - shade with leaves thin, spreading and ovate; sun leaves as var. drummondiana Wedd. This variety has leaves smooth or slightly scabrous above. According to ref. 16, sun form has leaves smaller, and thicker which are often recurved, narrower and rough-pubescent and is identified as this variety. This variety has leaves harshly scabrous above.
