Species Description

General: Monocot, perennial

Roots: adventitious, rhizomes, stolons

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; entire leaf margin; Parallel leaf venation; awl-shaped leaf shape

Inflorescence: panicle

Flowers: perfect; 3 merous; complete; hypogynous ovary position

Fruit: grain

Physiology: autotrophic; C3 C02 fixation

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is usually distributed on open, slightly acid sandy soil or shaded/open, sterile, abandoned sandy fields.

ILPIN Notes: Caespitose versus H. perennans; A. scabra has harshly scabrous panicle branches. Versus A. hyemalis, this species has larger spikelets and connivent glume-tips during fruiting. Mohlenbrock (ref 8) says there are 2 forms in Illinois: F. scabra - lemma awnless; F. tuckermanii Fern. - lemmas with short awns. Species is occasional in northern counties, absent from the southern quarter of the state.
