Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Found in open wooded bluffs and rocky woods.

ILPIN Notes: Bark used as a demulcent in the treatment of fevers and inflammation; causes hayfever; inner bark chewed as a gum. Flowers in fascicles; leaves strongly asymmetrical (at the base and very rough on the upper surface), winter buds covered with rusty colored hairs.
