Habitat: Species is distributed in rocky or open woods, along ledges and bluffs, associated with Carya ovata. See also SAF forest cover types.

ILPIN Notes: Ref. 2 says Illinois plants are var. brittonianum Porter. Species is occasional in the southern half of Illinois; uncommon elsewhere.
